What To Expect In Your First Counselling Session

You’ve done the hardest part. You reached out. Your first session is on the calendar. And now you’re sitting there, maybe a little nervous, wondering what you’ve gotten yourself into. I get it. The unknown can be terrifying.

Your first counselling session is about us setting a good foundation and understanding what you hope to achieve and how the process works. So let me walk you through what happens. No mystery. No scary surprises. Just a warm, honest guide to help you feel more at ease.

Before You Log On:

Here’s what you’ll need:

·         A quiet, private space where you won’t be interrupted.

·         A charged device.

·         A stable internet connection (test it beforehand if you are worried).

·         A glass of water nearby.

That’s it. No homework. No preparation. Just show up!

During the session

We might start with a simple “Can you hear me?” A smile. A moment to settle in. I might ask how your day has been, just to help you find your feet. I won’t dive straight into heavy questions. You won’t need to pretend to be fine. You can be messy, nervous, or even completely blank. That’s all okay.

This is your space and you get to fill it however you need.

I might ask some questions like:

-          “What brought you here today?”

-          “What would you like to be different?”

-          “What are your goals for counselling?”

But here’s the thing, there are NO WRONG ANSWERS! You can say “I don’t know where to start.” You can tell me that you’re nervous, or you can say nothing at all.  Silence is allowed. Tears are welcome. You don’t need to have your story neatly packaged and ready to go.

This is a two-way street. You can ask me questions too!

-          “What’s your approach?”

-          “Do you take notes during sessions?”

-          “What happens if I don’t know what to talk about?”

-          “How do I know if you are the right fit for me?”

I’ll answer openly and honestly.

Once you’ve settled in, we’ll start exploring what’s been going on. At your own pace. I might ask questions to understand, but I won’t push. You don’t have to share everything in the first session. You can keep your walls up if you need to. That’s completely okay. We’re just getting to know each other. Trust takes time, and I’m in no rush.

I will never force you to talk about anything you’re not ready to share. I will never judge you. I will never assume I know what is best for you. And I will never tell you to “just think positive.” My job is to walk beside you, not lead you somewhere that you are not ready to go.

When there are about 10 minutes left, I’ll gently let you know that we’re wrapping up. We might talk about how the session felt for you, anything that came up that might have surprised you, what you’d like to focus on next time, or practical tools and themes you might want to explore moving forward. You’re never expected to have all the answers, but I am here to help you find them.

After the Session

You might feel relieved, like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders. You might feel tired or emotional. Or you might feel nothing at all. All of these are completely normal. There is no right way to feel after a session. Be gentle with yourself. Make yourself a cup of tea. Sit outside for a few minutes. And just breathe.

If you decide you don’t want to come back, that’s allowed too. I won’t be offended or take it personally. Sometimes the fit isn’t right. Sometimes you’re not ready. Sometimes you just need someone different. Whatever the reason, the choice is always yours.

A Gentle Reminder

You are not broken. You are not too much. You are not failing at life. You’re just a person who needs space to slow down, untangle, and be heard. That’s all. And that first session? It is just a conversation with someone who isn’t going anywhere.

You’ve already done the hardest part of showing up. Now we just talk.

If you have been putting off that first session because you are unsure what to expect, I hope this helped.
